BECOMING A CANDIDATE

To qualify as a candidate for a seat on the City Council, you must reside and be registered to vote within the jurisdiction (incorporated City limits) at the time nomination papers are issued.  More specifically, you must be 1) at least 18 years old; and 2) a U.S. citizen; and 3) a Placerville resident; and 4) registered to vote in the city.  Candidate qualifications are established by state law.  Individuals should review applicable legal requirements or consult legal counsel if needed.

To become a candidate, you must first be issued a nomination paper which specifies the office you are seeking.  The nomination paper must be obtained in-person at 3101 Center Street, Placerville, CA  95667 (City Hall, Administration department) between July 13, 2026 and August 7, 2026.   A number of additional forms are also required to be filed.  Once the nomination paper/signatures are returned, the City Clerk's Office will forward your nomination paper to the El Dorado County Elections Department to compare the names, addresses and signatures with voter registration records.  At least 20 signatures (from individuals registered to vote within City limits) must match the voter registration records for you to qualify as a candidate.

Public Records Notice: Becoming a candidate for public office means that information submitted during the filing process becomes a matter of public record under the California Public Records Act.  Most candidate filing documents are available for public inspection and copying, except where disclosure is restricted by law.

COST

There is no cost to file nomination papers.  Candidates who choose to have a candidate statement printed in the voter's guide shall agree to pay $(to be determined).  An additional charge of $(to be determined) applies to statements published in Spanish.  If a candidate chooses to not submit a candidate statement, their name will still appear on the ballot.
