Trip to Green

Welcome to the Trip to Green Project Page!

Project Status:
The "Trip to Green" project in 2022 was a pilot program conducted over three weekends to test the concept and evaluate the effectiveness of setting all eastbound and westbound traffic signals to "green" on Highway 50.  Following the completion of the pilot program, the City of Placerville currently has no plans to implement the "Trip to Green" traffic management scenario in the near future.

However, since the pilot program was a success, the City of Placerville and El Dorado County Transportation Commission used the results of the pilot program to help secure grant funding for permanent infrastructure.  The proposed permanent project improvements will include Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology, a series of automatic barriers, barricades, and channelization of movements that will allow Highway 50 to flow safely and freely.  The project also includes a pedestrian overcrossing at Highway 50 and Canal Street.  The grant funding that was secured includes the environmental, design and right of way phase of the project.  Construction funding has not yet been identified. The environmental phase of this project will begin in 2024, and design work will be completed over the next three years.

The Final Comprehensive Draft US 50 Corridor Action Plan, which is the study that summarizes the implementation of the Trip to Green Proof of Concept, is available below.

What is Trip to Green?

For three weekends this fall, traffic signals on both eastbound and westbound US 50  in the City of Placerville will be set to stay green so that traffic may flow freely. To ensure safe travel, northbound and southbound movements across US 50 at Canal Street, Spring Street (SR/Highway49), and Bedford Avenue will be closed to public traffic, allowing emergency vehicle access only. Right-in and right-out access will remain available at Spring Street, Center Street, and Bedford Avenue. Detours will be available and information is provided below for local traffic wishing to travel outside of US 50.

Dates of Closures

Traffic signal closures will be taking place three weekends during the fall of 2022:

  • August 6 & 7: from 8am - 8pm each day
  • September 3, 4 & 5: from 8am - to 8pm each day
  • October 1 & 2: from 8am - 8pm each day
