Recycling

The 1989 California Integrated Waste Management Act (AB 939) mandates that every City and County in California divert 50% of their waste from landfills. In an effort to promote conservation and waste management practices of reduction, recycling/composting and environmentally safe land disposal, the City of Placerville urges you to help do your part in helping Placerville exceed the State’s standard.

With recycling we all save, in more ways than one. Recycling saves energy and natural resources. Did you know:

· Reprocessing used materials reduces energy needs for mining, refining and many manufacturing processes. Reprocessing used materials to make new products reduces the consumption of natural resources!

· Recycling paper cuts energy usage in half!

· Recycling reduces environmental damage and reduces the risks of air and water pollution from manufacturing!

· Recycling all of your home’s waste newsprint, cardboard, glass and metal can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 850 lbs. per year!

· You generate an average of 4.4 lbs. of waste per day!

· Enough energy is saved by recycling one aluminum can to light one 100-watt bulb for 20 hours!

· Americans throw away enough aluminum every three months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet!

· Annually, enough energy is saved by recycling steel to supply Los Angeles with electricity for almost 10 years!

· You can make 20 cans out of recycled material with the same amount of energy it takes to make one new one!

· One tree can filter up to 60 lbs. of pollutants from the air each year!

· Recycling just one car saves 2,500 lbs of iron ore, 1,400 lbs of coal and 120 lbs of limestone!

· Incinerating 10,000 tons of waste creates 1 job, land filling the same amount creates 6 jobs and recycling the same 10,000 tons creates 36 jobs!
